Welcome to the MAD, the Museum am Dom

At the MAD we aim to provide a place for a free and vigorous interchange of ideas. With historic artworks and contemporary artistic positions simultaneously on display, the MAD, Museum am Dom, offers a wide range of mind thrilling and emotionally exciting experiences.

Located at the center of town, the museum is easily accessible and so it invites everybody to share its presentations and ideas. Come in and discover the envisaging power of art. A visit to the museum helps to understand the arts as a means to approach substantive issues and questions of our time.

Fritz Koenig. SCHÖPFUNGEN.

("CREATIONS")

from 13.04.2024 to 14.07.2024

Fritz Koenig would have been 100 years old on 20 June 2024. This is an occasion to dedicate a cabinet exhibition to the Würzburg-born artist at the MAD. His most important works include the bronze portal of Würzburg Cathedral (1962/67). Koenig won the artist competition to design the cathedral doors in 1963. His design, as well as the two second and third-placed designs by Albert Schilling and Otto Sonnleitner, will be represented in the exhibition. Other objects provide a cross-section of Koenig's work between figuration and abstraction. Animals, especially horses, which he also kept in his own successful stables, play a major role. Koenig saw himself as closely connected to them. His drawings of hybrid creatures give an idea of this.

The memory of pain and suffering, as Koenig had to experience it as a child and during the war, is reflected in his sculptures, known as votives, caryatids and epitaphs. Viewers of Koenig's art are meant to empathise with the works, to physically feel what supports and burdens them.

He achieved his international breakthrough with his so-called spherical caryatid from 1967-72, which was erected on the plaza between the two towers of the Word Trade Center in New York until the attack of 11 September 2001 and now stands as a memorial in Battery Park.
